I wrote this album in 2018 right before the album « POP STORM » which I wrote in 2019 and just a little bit before the end of 2021 which was the moment where I decided finally to start releasing all my music on-line.
I kept it so long before releasing it because I was very proud of it and like the next free album which I will release probably in early 2027 I always thought to keep it as a safeguard in case I ran out of inspiration ‘cos these albums are so good that they really could have been standard albums and not free albums.
The first track especially « Glamour And Bright Lights » is an amazing dance track almost techno which I’m very proud of. That’s why I also made a long version available as Track 11.
This album is made of modern music like dance and techno mixed with an 80’s music feel. As for an 80’s music feel goes, I had fun on « When The Walls Come Tumbling Down » using a Linn Drum emulation software for the drums to sound like Prince drums did on his ’84 number 1 hit « When Doves Cry ».
« Paradise (Ain’t As Cold As Ice) » has sick sounds which I had fun pilling up. It’s experimental as can be, I love it. I even tried to make a very long almost 8 minute version of it but I wasn’t satisfied with the final results of this extended. But the short mix on track 3 remains excellent.
« Like We Used To Do » is a good simple track. When I wrote the album I thought at first to start the album with it. But since lately I always loved to start an album with a banger, I thought it was better to start right away with the techno banger « Glamour And Bright Lights » instead.
Initially « Paradise (Ain’t As Cold As Ice) » was supposed to have a long version and « The Angels Walk With Me » didn’t have one. But recently I’ve listening and loving « The Angels… » very much so I created a new long version in 2026 even though this is an old 2018 track. And I don’t regret it. « The Angels… » is amazing.
When I wrote this album back in 2018 I was quite a spiritual and religious person even though I am less so today, hence track names with words like « God » and « Angels ». It’s maybe wrong of me but my spiritual beliefs, even though I still have some are quite different today from what they were in 2018. But I love these tracks today anyway.
I wrote the track « Requiem For A Friend » when a co-worker of mine died. We weren’t really close but when you see a fifty-something mother every day and that she brings joy and wonder in your work environment you can’t be not shaken when she’s very lively on a Friday and that the next Monday someone at work tell you that she just died.
I was in shock at the time, since she had children and talked to us about a lot about her future plans for a soon coming vacation that never came in the end. I was so sad, I wrote this track about her.
I love the track « Save Me From Myself (Only You Can) » even though I’m not crazy about the sound of the main melody. I think it’s a bit harsch. In 2018 I didn’t had some amazing sounds I have today ‘cos I’m constantly buying new physical synthesizers and new VST softwares with amazing new sounds.
So I though about changing this sound for a better one now in 2026 but I didn’t want to risk changing the mood of this 2018 track which is beside that otherwise perfect so I didn’t. Since it’s one of the better tracks of this album with « Glamour… » and « Daddy Listen » I also made a long version of it.
The last 2 tracks of this album « His Country Is In His Soul » and « Daddy Listen » were made thinking about my Dad who died around the time of writing of this album.
« His Country Is In His Soul » is about him being crazy about his country of origin which is Portugal. No-one loved this country more than my Dad. My sisters and my mother prefered France over it. Me too but I enjoy my summer vacations in Portugal a whole lot more than my sisters and my mother. But no-one loved more Portugal than my Dad and this track is about that unconditionnal love my Dad had for his country of origin.
The track « Daddy Listen » is about my Dad as well. He loved my music very much even though contrary to my sister and myself he often thought my music always sounded the same in a way. So I often disagree with him about that but when he died I made this track about him and I often cry when I listen to it. This track dedicated to him always makes me think about him when I listen to it.
It’s an amazing track maybe the best of the whole album. I’m very proud of it that’s why I made a long version of it. And I’m very proud about those very Depeche Modesque drums. Very « Strangelove », I loved them and they make this track truly unique and wonderful.
Tracks 15 and 16 « Always A Place (In My Heart) » and « The Last Song Ever Made » were bonus tracks made for extra-tracks or b-sides for the singles. They’re not as good as the rest of the album I think, that’s why I ended up isolating them apart from the standard track listing after the long versions but they’re nice tracks anyway that really deserved a listen or two as well.
« Always A Place (In My Heart) » has a vibrating melody that sounds like the melody used on the original Star Trek series, I had a blast using it, it sounds like a Teramine.
Finally « Glamour And Bright Lights », « The Angels Walk With Me », « Daddy Listen » and « When The Walls Come Tumbling Down » all have shorten edits or remixed short versions in case they were turned one day into actual singles or extra-tracks material.
These shorten versions will be made available in the near future when a new retrospective called « The Early Years Best Of (Volume 2) » will be released in early 2028 if all goes according to my plan. So stay tuned.
